What is the Bariatric Support Group?

The Bariatric support group aims to offer a space for patients to share their experiences and work through some commonly reported difficulties after bariatric surgery. The group is facilitated by a senior psychologist who encourages patients to support and learn from each other.

What are the Benefits?

Support groups can play a significant role in the success of bariatric surgery. Attending a support group can be beneficial because:

  • Sharing experiences, challenges, and triumphs within a support group helps give people a sense of belonging and understanding, combating feelings of isolation or loneliness.
  • Speaking about your progress in a group can be a powerful motivator, keeping you on track with goals even when faced with difficulties.
  • Members of a support group uplift and inspire one another, providing a continuous source of encouragement.
  • Support groups become a great way to find practical tips from those on a similar journey.
  • Renew the commitment to leading a healthy lifestyle.

By attending a support group, patients can find validation for their thoughts and feelings. Knowing that other people have similar experiences helps to normalise what people go through and lessen any feelings of shame, embarrassment or failure. People typically leave support groups feeling empowered, motivated and positive
